## De Nimes Project - Drumoak

### Client brief

Our clients came to us with architectural plans showing a large extension to their cottage. The couple wanted the kitchen to be contemporary with a high-end industrial feel. They are real food lovers and one half of the couple was an enthusiastic and skilled cook, who enjoyed spending time in the kitchen. They also enjoyed having family and friends over to socialise so the space needed to be designed for entertaining as well as for food preparation.

### Challenges

The kitchen was long and required space for a snug at one end. Two of the walls in the kitchen were to be stonework, so our cabinetry would have to be scribed to fit the undulations. A tall wine fridge plus an extra-large fridge and freezer were to be included in the design, as was an Everhot stove. Seating was to be for at least four people. A prep sink and hot pot drop-off zone was to be designed into the island. Ease of use and accessibility was of paramount importance for food preparation.

### DESIGN PROCESS

The way the extension was designed meant that there was one long wall that seemed a natural fit to house some of the taller cabinetry - this became the run for a pantry cabinet with a quartz worktop diving the top section and lower drawer section. We designed the worktop to be visible even when the pantry is closed and it continues to the right to form a long run of base cabinetry which housed the sink, dishwasher and pull out bin to form a clear area to deal with waste.

The Everhot is also housed in this run with metal rods built into the quartz to act as a permanent trivet for hot pans. An additional feature was built into the quartz behind the sink to house condiments, a variety of aesthetic chopping boards and utensils.

Tiles from Fired Earth were selected to add visual interest and provide a practical splashback behind the Everhot and sink. Open shelving was designed above the tiling to draw the eye upward and provide space for decorative plants, glassware and coffee station accessories.

The space was wide enough to design in a large island. Space for seating was designed in to be opposite where our client would naturally do her food preparation to allow for sociability during entertaining. It was decided to create a slightly raised stained oak worktop for the seating area - this would tone in with the quartz and provide an additional structural feel to the space. An additional sink with Quooker tap was placed on the island along with a section of end grain oak - to provide an additional landing space for hot pots. Open shelving was built in to the base cabinets for easy access to cookware.

Our clients decided on handleless cabinetry to maintain the contemporary look and feel of the space. The final section of the kitchen was a full height wine fridge and industrial fridge and freezer in stainless steel. This was housed in the same grey stained oak that made up the lower cabinetry, open shelving and worktop to help tie all the aspects of the kitchen together. The addition of a pop of colour for the pantry was a bespoke colour choice from Farrow & Ball.

### Final Solution

We feel that this striking kitchen is not only highly practical for an enthusiastic food lover but also incredibly aesthetically pleasing with the contrast of textures, patterns and tones. The neon wall light ‘Good Vibes Only’ certainly reflects the feel of the finished kitchen - a place where you can’t help but feel good in it, whether you’re there for a coffee, an evening of food and entertainment or just to admire the design.
