## Mulberry Project - Ballogie

### Client brief

Our client came to us with a dream of having an in-frame traditional kitchen that would suit her countryside location. She’d bought a second-hand kitchen in the interim that had functioned well in the kitchen space but it was time for an upgrade. The kitchen was to feel timeless and full of character but be practical and sociable too.

### Challenges

The kitchen was part of an open plan kitchen/dining/living space so it was important that the flow of the kitchen felt in keeping with the larger space. There was French doors on one wall and a skylight over the current kitchen island. There was also a long narrow window running along the majority of the gable wall. The design was to suit the constraints of the space and make the most of the current features.

Craig also had to do a site visit to establish whether we could put the ducting from a vent hob into the floor, as there was no services to the original island and there was underfloor heating to work around (he managed to get it to work!).

There was also the challenge of different wall and ceiling levels where the house had been extended.

### DESIGN PROCESS

Given the architectural constraints it made sense to keep the layout roughly in the same place as the original kitchen - the sink under the long window, the tall cabinetry on the only full wall and a large island that allowed for flow between the kitchen and dining/living space.

We designed the island to house the hob, which was vented through the flooring (Craig ended up cutting a channel through the cement, being careful not to go too deep to affect the underfloor heating). To make the best use of the space needed for the vent, a wine rack and open shelves were designed in either side of the ends of the island.

Moving the hob to the island allowed room for a beautiful pantry between the fridge/freezer and oven housing. The internals were designed with spice racks to suit the customer's planned use of the space.

To make best use of the height of the extension and to make it more aesthetically pleasing, extra tall cabinetry was designed in to the oven, fridge, pantry run. Careful planning allowed us to create this, cutting the cornice and frame in such a way that fitted the unusual wall space but allowed for full functionality of the doors.

Once the design was finalised Peter helped our customer to select the cabinetry colour, work surface colour, hardware and finishing details. We were delighted that she went for a strong Mulberry colour, stunning work surface with deep natural veining and brushed brass hardware to tie in with the vintage feel to the kitchen.

### Final Solution

We think the combination of colours and textures alongside the aesthetically pleasing but functional design make this kitchen a huge success. Our customer is absolutely delighted with the final result - it fits beautifully into the stunning countryside setting and allows her to display her vintage treasures perfectly.
