## Pietra Cloud Project - Banchory

### Client brief

Our customer came to us with an old-school scrapbook of images of how she wanted her house renovation to feel, which gave us initial inspiration for the look and feel of the kitchen. The images showed light-filled spaces that felt quite Scandinavian, with a focus on the spaces feeling welcoming and cosy. She’d had a kitchen design from another company that hadn’t left her feeling very inspired so our task was to use the initial inspiration and give her something that was more elevated.

### Challenges

The room was an open-plan space that was to be a kitchen, dining and living room combined so we had to consider how to make the kitchen feel like an integrated part of the larger whole. The flow of the space and the sight lines from various angles were important to consider. The gable end of the kitchen was a particularly important aspect and the space was to feel sociable and inviting.

### DESIGN PROCESS

The kitchen is south-facing and has an incredible view of the local hills so it made sense to design the kitchen with that in mind. We initially designed the kitchen with a mantel as the focus on the gable wall but through a collaborative design session we simplified the mantel to a high quartz shelf that made the area a focal point but kept the design more minimal and Scandinavian in feel. The tall upstand and shelf were also practical to form a splashback behind the hob. To continue the feeling of clean lines a slim, white extractor was designed into additional boxed in wall space above the shelf, which we would build.

Considering the flow of the space it made sense to place the sink and that run of cabinets looking out at that stunning view. The positioning of the window also meant that we could extend the quartz work surface all the way to the window - allowing for the beauty of the quartz to be highlighted but also allowing your eye to flow uninterrupted to the hills.

We then designed a run of tall cabinetry on the opposite wall to the windows. There was enough space to design in a substantial island with seating that also faced south to the view. A breakfast bar counter in oak was designed into the island; the oak was also used to frame the tall units - allowing a continuity in materials. These elements added to the Scandinavian feel of the design and reflected the wood of the flooring and the internal doors that our customer had chosen.

A lot of consideration also went into the practical usage of the kitchen - where drawers would go, adding pull out shelving in the tall larder and hidden storage under the breakfast bar.

The last design decision was to change from the original proposal of J-pull handleless doors in white to a more timeless, simple, shaker door in porcelain thus softening the feel of the kitchen. The final touch was the choice of simple black hardware to keep the kitchen feeling contemporary and to echo the customer’s choice of black pendants over the island.

### Final Solution

The final design is a celebration of clean lines, natural materials and soft tones with small punchy details. We love the Scandi feel of the kitchen and how it fits in with the larger open plan space and the view out to the hills - celebrating our connection with nature. We also love the quartz statement shelf - allowing for a beautiful styling moment that will shift with the seasons and celebrations of the year. Our customer is looking forward to styling the kitchen for Christmas!
